January is a tough month. After the festivities of Christmas and the New Year, we’re all thrown back into reality with a bang and it can be a difficult transition. Now that February is here, we’re (hopefully) back to reality and holidaymakers can start planning for their next getaway.

For those looking to escape their routine and enjoy a much-needed holiday, February is a great month to travel with plenty of options available for all kinds of travellers regardless of whether you’re interested in a relaxing break in the sun, some fun on the slopes or an adventure in one of the world’s most attractive cities.

Here are some of the top choices this month:

Based in the visually breathtaking Alps, Innsbruck may not be the first destination that comes to mind in Austria, but its beautiful mountainous scenery and laid-back atmosphere make it a brilliant option for holidaymakers this February.

Whether you’re visiting to ski or to explore the magical Austrian culture, there is a wide range of things to do in the capital city of Tyrol. As well as an Olympic ski jump, there are nine ski areas open at the city’s ski resort, catering for beginners and experts alike.

In February, the Air and Style snowboarding event takes place in Innsbruck and nearby Seefield. There will be a number of leading snowboarders competing on the site’s enormous 42m ramp as well as performances from bands such as Rudimental and Sum 41.

Away from the slopes, there are a number of extraordinary sights and attractions to enjoy, including the Old Town (Altstadt von Innsbruck), which truly shines in the winter months. The area is full of magnificent architecture, stunning mountain views and a selection of excellent shops and cosy cafes for when you want to take a break from all the exploring.

With the blissfully calm waters of the Red Sea nearby, Eilat has emerged as a fantastic option for travellers looking for a relaxing stay in paradise. Based on the southern tip of Israel, the resort town enjoys sun all year round, with the average February temperature standing at a warm 16°C with highs of 21°C.

With weather milder than in the summer, next month is a great time to explore the wonderful scenery at Timna Park or the Red Canyon, or soak up the rays on Princess Beach, where you can spend time snorkeling through the shore’s protected beautiful corals.

As an added bonus, the 2016 Winter Red Sea Jazz Festival takes place from February 11th to February 13th, featuring performances from Israeli and international artists including world-renowned jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez and Israeli music legend Shlomo Gronich.

If you’ve always dreamed of swimming with dolphins, Eilat is the perfect destination as its Dolphin Reef allows tourists to enjoy close-up experiences with one of nature’s friendliest mammals.

For some winter sun, Larnaca could be the perfect place for a February getaway. Temperatures can reach as high as 20°C during the month, making it a great time to escape the UK’s winter freeze and explore the many delights of Cyprus.

For February, there are free winter experiences provided by the country’s tourism board including tours of the Mazotos Camel Park and a visit to local village Athienou to see the Kallinikeio Museum. The month is also a great time to explore the area’s fascinating culture at the beautiful Municipal Museum of Natural History.

However, as the weather remains warm, travellers can still enjoy many of the same attractions they would in the summer. Mckenzie Beach will be a popular spot for travellers searching for some winter sun. There are some excellent restaurants nearby such as the Lush Beach Bar Resto, where there are some mouth-watering local dishes available.

Faro offers much more to travellers than the standard beach destination. With stunning architecture and magnificent castles offering excellent photo opportunities and unforgettable history.

With temperatures standing at a mild 13°C on average, February is a great time to explore the city’s extraordinary Old Town; where you can see the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo & Capela dos Ossos in all its majesty. The church is gilded with gold and offers a fascinating insight into the city’s past.

Faro’s annual Mardi Gras will take place on February 9th this year, which will give tourists a glimpse into Portugal’s culture as the festival vibe takes over the area with beautiful floats and music creating a fantastic atmosphere.

Foodies will also find much to enjoy in Faro, with a number of delightful Portuguese restaurants in the area. Perhaps try the Faaron Steakhouse for some of the best meat in the city, or maybe try the Faz Gostos for some delectable seafood.

Alicante enjoys up to six hours of sunshine in February, so tourists can replace the UK’s harsh winters with some Mediterranean sun.

You can swap your rainy commute with a walk to the golden sands of Playa del Postiguet beach and take a walk up to the Castle of Santa Barbara, where you can take advantage of excellent photo opportunities overlooking the city’s glorious coastline.

February’s mild temperatures also make the month a great time of year to explore the Guadalest Valley by foot. With outstanding scenery and trails to suit all abilities, the area is a must-see for nature lovers.

Latin American rockers The Magic of Santana will be appearing in Alicante during the month, too. The band, featuring original members of Santana, are set to perform at Teatro Principal de Alicante on February 11th, giving tourists the chance to catch some excellent live music during their stay.

If you have the chance, there is even the option to take the Alicante Tram for the 1 hour 15 minute trip to Benidorm, where you’ll be dropped off just half a mile away from the beach.
