Who says that you can’t mix romance with a little bit of adventure?

As ‘A Couple Travelers,’ Vicky and I have been travelling the world for over a year and a half, and we’ve spent multiple Valentine’s days abroad. Sometimes, we just can’t get a gourmet dinner or candy hearts. So, we have to settle for a bit of adventure to spice up our holiday. Here are some of our favourite adventure destinations that still pack a romantic punch.

Canyoning In Goa

Yes, India may be the land of spices, curry, and the Taj Mahal, but it is certainly not void of adventure. Perhaps surprisingly, there is some fantastic canyoning in Goa. If you’re not sure what canyoning is, well, it’s exactly what it sounds like; venturing through canyons through a mix of walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, rappelling, and swimming. You’ll be in a harness and closely supervised, but it’s a thrill.

Canyoning is all about working as a team so you’ll need to work together, trust each other, and communicate to get to where you need to go. Really, canyoning is the ultimate way to rekindling the romance!

The best part: Goa is an amazing beach destination as well as an incredible adventure landscape. After you’ve tackled the canyons, hit the beach for some well-deserved recovery and romance.

Skiing In Grenoble

Ooh la la! How about a trip to France to celebrate your romance? Let’s face it, France has cornered the market on love, hands down. Paris is arguably the most romantic city in the world, and thousands flock there every year to profess their love to their other half. But what else is there to do in France?

Well, skiing down Grenoble’s Olympic slopes, of course! Imagine snuggling by the fire after a long day of skiing, a hot cup of cocoa and a crispy croissant in hand and your Valentine’s Day sweetheart by your side. Add in a healthy dose of adrenaline from tackling moguls, zipping through the trees, and slicing through fresh powder. Tell me that isn’t the ideal getaway.

Volcano and Hot Springs In Santorini

When most people think about Greece, they think of thousands of years of history, great food, beautiful beaches, and a rich culture of hospitality.

All of that is true, but did you know that Greece also offers volcanoes and hot springs? The island of Santorini, which just happens to be one of the most romantic spots on Earth, has some great hikes, red beaches, and incredible warm waters. And, Rhodes, Crete, and Bodrum are conveniently just a ferry ride away!

Spend a couple a day exploring the volcanoes and hot springs – the waters by Palea Kameni are amongst the best.  And, make sure to squeeze in a stop at Oia, on the north side of the island, for a glimpse at one of the most famous sunsets in the world.  If that doesn’t rekindle the romance, I’m not sure what will.

Flamenco Dancing in Barcelona

Flamenco in Barcelona. Flamenco is often associated with the Romani people of Spain (which sounds pretty close to ‘romance,’ doesn’t it?).  It is one of the most passionate, exciting dances and will definitely get your blood running and unite you with your partner.

If learning flamenco is not exactly your style, you can always view it from afar and watch a show – nothing wrong with letting the professionals do what they do best. At El Tablao de Carmen, even being in the audience will get the excitement going.

Base Jumping In Berlin

Ever thought about jumping off a building? I have. In fact, I did it just last year. Seriously!

And I’m alive to tell the tale. Of course, there was a harness involved.

What I’m talking about is base jumping in Berlin. It’s just a quick trip from Munich, and it’s worth the effort!

Note: this is not for the faint of heart. But, for the ultimate adrenaline junkie, there’s nothing more exhilarating than free falling from a few hundred feet.

It’s pretty romantic too. In fact, while I was up standing in line, the gentleman in front of me made it known that he was going to propose to his girlfriend on the way down. Yep, he fell screaming at the top of his lungs, “will you marry me!?!?”

And you know what?

She said yes.
