The Best Summer Music Festivals

When summer hits, so do the music festivals, with Ibiza Rocks kicking off today. However, as we all know, summer doesn’t always mean sunny in the UK! Why not leave the mud behind this year and jet off somewhere with festival-worthy weather? Here’s our round-up of the ten best summer music festivals across Europe:

Ibiza Rocks

Ibiza Rocks marks the start of summer festivals, and some of the world’s top performers will be hitting the island today. This year’s White Isle extravaganza line-up includes Zane Lowe, Lily Allen, Mark Ronson, Tinie Tempah, Example and many more. Book into the Ibiza Rocks Hotel for a poolside seat at the party of the summer.

Sunsplash Festival

Who’s performing: Zara MacFarlane, Osunlade, Gilles Peterson, Karizma, Phil Asher, Rainer Trueby, Mark de Clive-Lowe

Destination: Bodrum, Turkey

When to go: Right now! June 2-7

Now in full swing, Sunsplash is a ‘boutique’ music festival, so think beachfront stages, stunning sea views and an exclusive feel. Soulful dance and electronica are on the menu at this chilled-out festival, with the action taking place on the private Aspat Beach, a stunning stretch of sand guarded by Aspat Mountain. You can even enjoy a yoga workshop if the mood takes you – very zen!

Festival Caracalla

Who’s performing: The Tokyo Ballet

Destination: Rome, Italy

When to go: June-August

For something a little more highbrow than a tent in the field, seeing an outdoor opera or ballet at the beautiful Baths of Caracalla is a magical experience. This year, the summer season of the Teatro dell’Opera offers operas Carmen and La Boheme, and ballets Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

Nice Jazz Festival

Who’s performing: Richard Galliano and the Nice Jazz Orchestra, Patrice, Keziah Jones, Cecile McLorin Salvant

Destination: Nice, France

When to go: July 8-12

If you’re into jazz, why not pack your nautical prints and head to Nice for this classy festival? Two open-air venues in the leafy Jardin Albert host a packed jazz programme with a different theme each day.

Sonar

Who’s performing: Lykke Li, Massive Attack, 2ManyDJs, James Murphy, Röyksopp & Robyn, Rudimental

Destination: Barcelona, Spain

When to go: June 12-14

Sonar is the largest festival of its kind in Europe and an amazing merger of music and multimedia art. Day events are held at Fira Montjuic, while the afterdark magic happens at the Fira Gran Via L’Hospitalet fairground. While you’re there, why not see some essential Barcelona sights – the Sagrada Familia is a must.

The Garden Festival

Who’s performing: Bicep, Craig Richards, Eats Everything, Darshan Jesrani, Prosumer, Wolf and Lamb, Soul Clap, Tim Sweeney, Ben UFO, Crazy P Soundsystem, Genius of Time, KiNK, Session Victim, Seven Davis JR, and Paqua

Destination: Tisno, near Split

When to go: July 2-9

The Croatian coastal city of Split is quickly becoming a hot spot for trendy young things. Throw a seven-night festival into the mix and you have the perfect summer party in paradise. Held in Tisno, overlooking the deep blue Adriatic, The Garden Festival is a dance music spectacular.

FiJazz Alicante

Who’s performing: Mike Sterns and Bill Evans, Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke, David Holland ‘Prism’, Ximo Tebar and IVAM Jazz Ensemble, Hiromi ‘The Trio Project’

Destination: Alicante, Spain

When to go: July 18-26

The FiJazz Festival is bringing the fiesta to Alicante this July. Catch the smooth strains of the jazz masters between hitting the museums, beaches and parks of this sunny Spanish city.

Paphos Aphrodite Festival

Who’s performing: The Opera Futura of Verona and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra in Cosi fan Tutte

Destination: Paphos, Cyprus

When to go: September 6-8

There’s plenty to love about this Greek island opera festival held in the grounds of a medieval castle. Paphos has a wealth of cultural attractions including ancient cities and amphitheatres, and this festival will round a culture vulture’s holiday off perfectly.
