Strong passenger numbers for first anniversary of Monarch’s East Midlands base
It’s our one-year anniversary at East Midlands Airport!
That’s right, 12 wonderful months carrying 358,477 passengers to popular summer destinations, surpassing our forecasted passenger figures by a fantastic 15%.
East Midlanders love the sun, with Faro being the established favourite destination, though flights to Malaga and Palma have also done well since they launched in August 2012..
Other destinations were added later in the year, including Ibiza and, over the winter, Tenerife and Lanzarote.
East Midlands became our fifth base, joining London’s Luton and Gatwick Airports, Manchester and nearby Birmingham, strengthening our presence in the Midlands region. Our sixth base, Leeds Bradford was established in December 2012.
Our twenty-four dedicated East Midlands cabin crew now benefit from a new crew room at the airport, which was opened in early summer 2013.
Managing director Kevin George says beating our predicted passenger numbers for East Midlands Airport in the first year is a very positive start for our fifth base. “In addition, we have brought new jobs to the region and opened a brand new crew room, which firmly cements our presence at the airport and further strengthens our growing popularity in the Midlands.”
Stephen Turner, Aviation Commercial Director for MAG, owners of East Midlands said the company was thrilled with the success of Monarch’s first year at East Midlands Airport.
“In only 12 months, it’s impressive to see the airline rapidly establish a strong customer base in the East Midlands, leading to passenger numbers exceeding initial forecasts. We are very much looking forward to Monarch’s strong performance continuing, as the airline embarks on its second year of operation at the airport.”
