• Prince Harry is by far Brits’ most-wanted ski lift partner
• Kim and Kanye least popular celebrities with winter snow sport fans
• Unusual ski lift conversation topics include Latin American rap and frozen nasal hair
• British snow sports enthusiasts are super-polite selfie takers
(Luton, UK – 27 October 2015) Royals yes, reality stars no – the slopes are no place for the Z list according to Brits, and Prince Harry is the famous face with whom we’d most like to share a cosy spot on a ski lift.
In a poll of UK adults by Monarch, the leading scheduled airline to leisure destinations, the fun-loving Royal scooped a huge 37% of the vote, making Harry three times as popular as his closest rival, fellow Royal circle skier Pippa Middleton (13%). Famous for his love of chillaxing, Prime Minister David Cameron was the third most desirable ski lift partner, with 12% of the votes.
However it seems reality stars are much less popular with the ski set – all three celebrities at the bottom of the poll owe their fame to reality shows.
Although they may be fans of hitting the slopes, Kim and Kanye were by far the least popular ski lift partners, with only 0.6% of the vote. Other reality stars fared similarly badly, with Mark Wright and Michelle Keegan polling second from bottom with 1.5% of the vote, and Made in Chelsea’s Jamie and Spencer only slightly more popular with 2% of all votes.
However, despite preferring to share the slopes with a higher class of “celebrity” British snow sports enthusiasts are still a savvy bunch who watch the pennies, with 73% believing that winter snow holidays are too expensive.
British skiers are also a friendly lot with almost two thirds (60%) happy to start a conversation with their fellow ski lift passengers. A further 32% will join in a conversation if spoken to, and only 8% refuse to engage in a ski lift chit-chat.
And although the most popular conversation topics are the quality of the skiing on offer (43%) and the perennial British conversation starter, the weather (27%), Brits hitting the slopes have been engaged in some altogether more unusual ski lift small talk. Why snails come out when it rains, frozen nasal hair and Latin American rap music have all been topics that Brits have found themselves discussing high above the slopes.
However, despite being happy to engage in conversation with fellow ski lift users, one in five Brits (20%) would still let a spare seat go to avoid having to sit with a stranger.
Selfie-taking was deemed the most acceptable ski-lift activity (48%), ahead of drinking (39%) and eating (35%). The most popular snow sport selfie situations are action shots on the slopes (48%), ahead of après-ski socialising snaps (39%).
Etiquette is still very important to Brits on the slopes – over a third (34%) of those polled placed the British as the most polite nation on the slopes, well ahead of second-placed Austrians (17%) and the Swiss (15%). Passing dangerously was considered the worst breach of slope etiquette (30%) ahead of queue jumping (14%) and being drunk on the piste (13%).
Commenting on the findings, Ian Chambers, Head of Digital and Marketing at Monarch says: “Although we can’t promise a seat next to Prince Harry, we can offer customers winter sports holidays that represent better value than ever.
“Popular with British snow sports enthusiasts, Monarch flies to the ski destinations of Grenoble, Geneva, Salzburg and Innsbruck as well as others across France, Austria and Italy.
“We currently have over 3,500 seats available at only £33, to some of Europe’s biggest snow sport destinations such as Innsbruck, Lyon and Geneva. And with full holiday packages from only £285, 10% off pre-booked ski carriage and no charge for carrying ski boots in a second bag, our customers are able to hit the slopes no matter what their budget.”
Monarch’s ski flash sale ends on 6th November 2015.
