Taking up an unbeatable position along the coast of the Adriatic, Croatia is fast becoming a holiday hotspot. That’s because it offers a wonderful mixture of stunning scenery, beautiful islands and fascinating cities. Its crowning jewel is Dubrovnik, known as the Pearl of the Adriatic.

From its complete set of walls to the sea of terracotta roofs that stretch out in front of you, it’s almost impossible not to be charmed by Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Soak up the culture and architecture of the Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace, as well as museums explaining all aspects of the region’s history.

The picturesque region of the Costa del Sol in the south of Spain needs little introduction. British holidaymakers have been discovering its whitewashed villages and beautiful beaches for decades. Known as the sunshine coast, it welcomes around 320 days of sunny weather every year, making it the perfect antidote to unpredictable British summertime.

Situated on the coast, Malaga offers the perfect combination of relaxing beach days and exciting city life. You can be swimming in the sea and building sandcastles in the morning, taking in the art at the Picasso Museum in the afternoon and enjoying sumptuous tapas and a glass of the region’s sweet wine in the evening.

Tenerife

It’s hard to pick which of the Canary Islands to spend your holidays on, but for summer 2017 we think that Tenerife has just cinched it. Its volcanic landscape, including the towering Mount Teide really sets it apart and gives many of its beaches their distinctive black sand. It is against this backdrop that you can enjoy the beauty of nature, a traditional way of life and some great relaxation.

For some this may mean days lazing on the beach, while others will wish to take hikes along the Masca Valley and in many of Tenerife’s stunning locations. Don’t miss out on seeing the stars either, as the island’s national parks are the perfect place to watch the sun go down and the night sky come to life.

Since the Canaries are such wonderful holiday destinations we couldn’t resist including a second one in our list. Here you will find a relaxed vibe, beautiful beaches and delicious dishes cooked up in time-honoured fashion. It’s difficult to think what else you might need in a holiday, but there are more activities to enjoy on the island if you so wish.

There is the Timanfaya National Park, with the imposing Islote de Hilario volcano the most prominent hint at its geology. Venture below the ground, however, and you will find caves and lava tunnels that were created when the island was at its most volatile in terms of eruptions.

Portugal’s capital city has something for everyone, as each of its neighbourhoods has its own distinctive personality. You can take in the sweeping vistas on display from Alfama or see the traditional blue and white tiles made by artisans throughout its many streets. There’s the seafaring history of Belem and the lively bars of Bairro Alto all to be discovered.

As a hilly city, it’s worth making use of the transport infrastructure on offer. This means taking a ride in one of Lisbon’s iconic yellow trams or experiencing history first-hand in a wrought iron elevator magically delivering you to a higher neighbourhood with minimal effort.

Whether you’re a football fan or keen to enjoy the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, Barcelona is sure to ignite your passions. Stadium tours of the famous Nou Camp and visits to the Sagrada Familia sit alongside each other in the Catalan city that has so much to offer. You can wander down the Ramblas in the heart of Barcelona and find yourself right at the beach or take to the skies in the cable car that crosses the harbour and simply soak up the views.

Barcelona is also an incredible culinary destination, so if you fancy yourself a bit of a foodie, you’ll find plenty of inspiration here. Bars groan from under the weight of the tapas selection and the vibrant colours of the ingredients in the Boqueria Market mean they are begging to be bought and cooked up into delicious dishes.
