There’s plenty of reasons why Portugal can be claimed the best golf destination, but even more so now after winning the top honour at the World Golf Awards, beating locations from all over the world including Abu Dhabi, Brazil and Indonesia. Votes were made by members of the golf travel and tourism industry and customers, with the event celebrating the success of golf worldwide. But we at Monarch also think it’s a fantastic golf destination, and here’s why…
It’s home to the amazing Quinta do Lago
Portugal is home to a stunning selection of courses, including the magnificent Quinta do Lago. Across the resort are three courses surrounded by a beach, restaurants and retailers, making it a dream holiday destination for golfers looking for a relaxing break.
The south 18-hole course is located within the estate and has been used several times for the Portuguese Open. Its tactically-placed hazards mean it is sure to be a challenge for golfers, whereas it’s pine-lined layout and water features make it one of the most aesthetically pleasing in Europe.
Elsewhere, the north course was recently redesigned, with an aim to create holes that are enjoyable for players regardless of ability. Bunkers and water hazards mean it is a challenge for players of all skill levels and its extraordinary design helped it win the Best New Golf Course in Europe honour at the 2014 World Golf Awards.
Last but not least, the amazing Laranjal course is ideal for advanced golfers. Stretching 6,480m and boasting five beautiful lakes, it provides high-speed greens and incredible putting surfaces to ensure a spectacular experience. The hazards can be challenging for inexperienced players, but the stunning views will help you persevere with even the most difficult holes.
The conditions are perfect
Golfing in the UK can be fantastic, but the winter weather often ruins the fun, as heavy downpours and strong winds put sessions to an end.
On the other hand, Portugal’s warm climate allows golf to be a year-round activity, making it the ideal place to visit for those looking to escape the miserable British weather and work on their game.
While conditions are at their best in spring and summer, winters in the country remain mild. Therefore, resorts such as the stunning Vilamoura can be enjoyed to their fullest even in December and January.
The resort has six incredible courses: the Victoria, Millennium, Pinhal, Laguna, Villa Sol and the Old Course. These offer a great mix of holes to suit all proficiency levels, creating an excellent learning curve for beginners and some tough challenges for experienced players.
You can take the whole family
Not only is Portugal only a couple of hours away, but it’s perfect for a family golf holiday. With so many courses to choose from, there’s also plenty of other things to do to keep the whole family entertained, particularly in the Algarve. After a few hours of teeing off on the wonderful courses in Carvoiero, you can enjoy put your feet up on da Rocha beach, or explore the beauty of Ria Formosa Park.
However, if you really cannot get away from the green, you can always try some mini golf at the Family Golf Park, which is based close to the golf courses of Vilamoura. With an ancient Rome theme, the holes look incredible and it is a great way to introduce them to the sport.
The food here is truly fantastic, too. Le Cro Portugal is one of the top restaurants, boasting an incredible menu of tapas and other local and international dishes. For more choice, Monica’s Restaurant in Vale do Lobo is a fantastic option, offering something for a all kinds of taste buds.
