As we approach autumn, many Britons will perhaps be looking at enjoying a relaxing break away ahead of the hectic Christmas period.

Whether you’re looking for a delightful few days on the beach, or interested in taking in some fascinating culture in an exciting new city, there are plenty of outstanding destinations to look forward to this October.

Funchal

With magical scenery, amazing beaches and a laid-back atmosphere, there are plenty of reasons to visit this wonderful Portuguese city next month.

One of the top events taking place is the Madeira Nature Festival, which runs from October 4th-9th. This new carnival is the latest addition to the tourist entertainment calendar and aims to cover all kinds of nature, with land, air and sea activities available. Expect awesome activities such as trekking, sailing and paragliding.

What’s more, the Madeira Organ Festival takes place from October 9th-18th, with plenty of incredible performances scheduled across amazing venues including Funchal Cathedral, College Church and the Church of St Peter. These celebrate the legacy of organ music across the area and feature some of the top local musicians.

Dubrovnik

Even though it is typically thought of as a summer destination for Britons, October is a fantastic time for travellers to visit Dubrovnik, escape the hustle and bustle and make the most of its wonderful attractions.

If you’re looking to sample the amazing food of Croatia, next month is the perfect time to arrive, with the Good Food Festival taking place from October 20th-23rd. Try incredible regional wines, culinary workshops and learn how to make tasty treats such as gulozece. Local restaurants will also join in by offering special menus to commemorate the occasion.

Art fans can take advantage of a wonderful exhibition of ceramic works in the Pablo Picasso exhibition, where over 100 original works from the legendary artist will be on show. Available at the St Clare convent from October 4th-31st, expect some breathtaking creations from a true icon.

Lisbon

With a fantastic mix of cultural attractions, amazing scenery and jaw-dropping architecture, Lisbon makes for a magnificent holiday destination this October.

One of the top events to look forward to next month is Desorient Express at the Museum of the Orient, where some excellent historic art works will be on display from October 7th-December 31st. Ceramist Bela Silva has put together a stunning array of pieces that explore the connections and contrasts between Western and Eastern cultures over time.

Pop music fans are sure to be excited about the arrival of Fifth Harmony on October 16th at the Campo Pequeno. Formed on the X-Factor USA in July 2012, the group has attained significant chart success worldwide and will be bringing their emphatic stage show to Europe this autumn.

Gran Canaria

Providing gloriously sunny weather all year round and some of Europe’s best beaches, Gran Canaria has always been viewed as a popular destination for a winter break. By visiting in October, you can dodge the larger summer crowds while still enjoying the wonderfully warm Canaries climate.

One of the island’s enduring traditions, the procession of La Romeria del Rosario, takes place on October 3rd and sees several participants dressed in traditional costumes walk from San Telmo Park in Vegueta to the Parish Church of Santo Domingo, with the pathway adorned with stunning decorations. It gives a fascinating insight into the history of this island, which is far more than just a beach destination.

October also sees the groundbreaking Earth Wind and Fire perform at the Estadio de Gran Canaria on October 21st. The historic rockers have made a successful career out of a meshing together an array of genres, ranging from soul to rock and jazz, and will be sure to put on an unforgettable show in front of a raucous crowd.

Fuerteventura

Much like Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura offers excellent weather during all four seasons of the year and, while the crowds are smaller in October, expect the same amazing attractions that were a hit with holidaymakers all summer.

One of the top events for visitors to enjoy is the Fiesta de la Pena del Mar in Caleta de Fuste on October 16th-18th, where you can expect some amazing live music, games and an incredible atmosphere.

With the autumn meaning darker evenings, it is the perfect time of year to see the beauty of the Canaries’ night sky. There are some outstanding tours available in Corralejo, where tourists will be able to look into space and see unforgettable sights. You may even be lucky enough to see a shooting star!
