Last but not least, Meet Geri – the remaining cabin crew featuring in our TV advert tells us about herself, what made her want to start working for Monarch 20 years ago, what kept her in the company and how she ended up on TV!
Let’s start with…her audition video:
Nice to meet you Geri! To start off, tell me a little bit about you.
I was born and raised in Coventry and studied Travel & Tourism before my journey in my sky suit took off in 1996 as Monarch cabin crew in Birmingham. During my time in Monarch I have worked out of most of our bases including London Gatwick and Edinburgh. 12 years ago, whilst based at London Gatwick, I travelled to Manchester to operate a “Wish upon a star” flight to Lapland. It was on this flight I met my husband Steve and transferred base to Manchester. The rest is history as they say, and we now have two beautiful children, Orlaith and Thomas. My current role is as Service Excellence Manager (SEM) for the North.
If your friends described you in three words, they would say…
Fun, Loyal and Caring
What made you want to work for Monarch?
From my earliest memory of being a little girl, I wanted to be an air hostess. I loved the buzz and excitement of the airport. I remember going on holiday with Monarch and all the crew were so friendly and I knew I wanted to work for them.
How long have you been working for Monarch?
I’ve been with Monarch for 20 years, which have quite literally flown by!
What gives you the most satisfaction in the job?
The diversity of the job. As a SEM, I enjoy a close working relationship with 32 cabin managers. My role provides a point of contact for our cabin managers to seek advice, offer support and encouragement and provides a platform to make the most of their strengths and talents. Within our team, we share ideas and suggestions to enhance our customers experience on board.
What keeps you motivated to enjoy your job?
Definitely the people I work with. I believe Monarch has some of the best crew in the industry and there is a real friendly family feel.
What do you love the most about it?
I have been lucky to have had some fantastic experiences in my time with Monarch, made lifelong friends and had the privilege to visit some amazing destinations.
Looking after our customers and giving them a great service is so important to me. Some of our customers will have the date of their holiday circled on their calendar for a year. It’s a really important date in their diary and something they will have looked forward to for a long time. I love having the opportunity to make this date a special one by creating special memories like a flight deck visit on the ground for the children. The parents take a photo and it’s a special moment captured in time.
What made you want to audition for the TV ad?
It seemed like a once in a life time opportunity and a really exciting adventure.
How did you feel when you were told you had been picked to feature in Monarch’s TV advert?
I was absolutely thrilled and felt very lucky to be given such an amazing opportunity. I felt very honoured to be representing Monarch is such a big way.
How did you find the filming process?
I loved every part of the filming process. In my 20-year career at Monarch it was the best experience I’ve had. It was so much fun and it was fascinating experiencing all the behind the scenes preparation that went into the filming. I wouldn’t say acting came natural to me…but I certainly had lots of fun practising and perfecting the art 🙂 On location we had hair, make up and wardrobe waiting for us. I could definitely get used to that life!
Any advice for those thinking or pursuing a career similar to yours?
Absolutely go for it, you’ll never look back. Every day is different in our office in the sky! You will get to meet so many people along your journey. The training alone will give you such important life skills such as CPR training. Such a valuable skill you can never underestimate. Once you start your career in Monarch it opens up lots of opportunities to get involved in other things like interviewing, course assisting and PR work.
On Monarch’s scheduled network, which is your favourite destination and why?
My favourite destination is Alicante. A big part of my heart is in Quesada, 30 minutes south of Alicante airport. My husband and I bought a villa in Quesda a few years ago. We have the best family holidays with our children Orlaith and Thomas and our parents there. The scenery is beautiful, food is great and there’s plenty of things to do for the kids. It’s home from home for us and only 2 and a half hours away.
