The Junior Golf Championship 2016 ran from 31st October- 4th November where a variety of young talent were able to showcase their dynamic skills. Liam Gibson our Direct Marketing & CRM Manager got to attend the great event and had this to say:
I was fortunate enough to attend the Junior Golf Tournament , hosted by the Quinta do Lago resort in Portugal last week. For the past 30 years, this tournament has been the breeding ground for some iconic household names, most notably Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Monarch were a sponsor as we provided the flights to get all the players, organisers, officials and other sponsors out to Faro and onto their destination (only 20 mins away from the airport).
Twenty one junior golfers between the ages of 14-18, competed for the title of The Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Champion 2016. One boy and one girl champion would be crowned after three days of competition at the wonderful Quinta do Lago North course.
Every player earned their place in the finals by winning a qualifier back in the UK so from a total of 25,855 who started out on the journey, we really did have the best of the young talent out there!
The boy’s winner Harry Goddard, who studies sports science at Herts Regional College, showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels as he ended up nine shots clear of the next best competitor- over the three days of competition, that really was an impressive win. 16 year- old Harry made me feel both very old and equally inept at golf when I saw him in action!
Hannah Screen, also 16 years of age, won the girls event and now aims to become an elite golfer after her win. She hails from Berkhamsted and is truly a rising star amongst the female youngsters.
This golf event was run was by Brookes Sport, a specialist sports agency, and was rolled out to an absolute tee (boom boom). The organisation needed to ensure players, their parents, sponsors, officials and golf staff were all in the right place at the right time, was very impressive. A big thank you to Sophie and Sonia especially for their hard work!
The winners were presented with their trophies on course by ex-Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, who takes a keen interest in seeing the development of the junior winners over the years. Along with the accolade of junior champion golfer, a surprise gift was also given to them at the Gala Dinner – an invite to play in the pro-am at the BMW PGA Championship in May, held at Wentworth. Nice work kids!
