Once the fun of Christmas is over and done with, it can sometimes seem as though there’s nothing to look forward to, with only the cold and bleak winter weather to greet you each day. That’s why this is the best time of the year to book a holiday somewhere warm.
You can, of course, begin researching your summer break, but a better way to beat the winter blues is to jet off on a holiday in January. Finding last-minute deals at this time of the year is guaranteed to cheer you up and a great way to get you through the rest of winter.
So, where should you go? We’ve come up with a few suggestions to give you some inspiration.
If you’re after something exotic and totally different to the UK, you can’t beat Goa in India. Our winter is one of the best times to travel to this particular destination, as the weather is sunny and dry – and it’s also when there are a host of festivals and parties.
This is when the beach parties and music festivals are in full swing, all taking advantage of the warm, dry conditions to make the most of Goa as a party hub. If you’re hoping to spend your days lounging on a tropical beach working on your tan and your evenings dancing under the stars, this is certainly the place to go. Just as a tip, the north Goan resorts tend to have the most bustling nightlife, so make a beeline for these if this is what you’re after.
If you’re not keen on flying quite so far for your winter getaway, set your sights somewhere a little closer, like Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. This is just over a five-hour flight away, making it more manageable if you don’t have more than a week for a break.
Even though it’s winter here as well, you’re guaranteed plenty of sun and warmer temperatures than you’ll typically find in the UK. Its position on the Red Sea coast means you’ll have easy access to gorgeous sandy beaches and the clear, refreshing sea.
This is a great choice if you’re after a slightly more active break, as you can go snorkelling, try scuba diving, learn to wind or kite surf, or go quad-biking in the desert during a stay here. There are also plenty of clubs and bars in Sharm itself in case you fancy having a couple of nights out.
Another fantastic – and easily accessible – option for a winter sun break is Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. While this archipelago is part of Spain, its position off the north African coast means that it experiences warm and sunny year-round weather.
Gran Canaria is a particularly good choice if you’re after beautiful beaches and stunning scenery. The island is often referred to as a miniature continent because of the variety of landscapes found here. If you’re travelling in the winter, it’s best to stay in the south, though, because this part of the isle tends to be warmer than elsewhere, making it perfect for lazy days at the beach – and there are certainly plenty of stretches of sand for you to enjoy along Gran Canaria’s coastline.
