This year’s summer getaway is well underway, and although many of us have had our two week sun-and-sand-fest booked since the beginning of the year, some of us haven’t yet got round to booking a summer holiday.
Well, fear not if you’re the last minute type. There are still some great last minute deals to be had and we’ve selected our pick of the top destinations to visit this summer. Happy travels!
A perfect last minute option combining gorgeous beaches with charming seaside resorts, Portugal’s Algarve coast has plenty of activities to keep you entertained, from golf in Faro to sightseeing or simply topping up your tan. Head to Cape St Vincent on Portugal’s southwestern tip, for dramatic views of the cliffs set against the Atlantic Ocean.
Boasting lively resorts where you can kick your heels up, sleepy villages for enjoying leisurely lunches and enough sporting activities to keep even the most ardent athlete entertained, Spain’s Costa Blanca has it all. Choose from the thumping beats of Benidorm, Calpe’s pristine beaches or Alicante’s old quarter. Either way, you won’t find yourself short of things to do.
Lanzarote’s astonishing volcanic landscape is quite the sight to behold – dark black earth set against the azure sky. Surprisingly enough, the island also boasts glorious white sandy beaches, just perfect for sun worshippers and beach bunnies. Active holidaymakers should note that this is just the place to get out on a bike – the mountainous terrain makes for ideal biking conditions – and you might even spot a pro or two being put through their paces.
From Palma’s spectacular Cathedral to secluded coves like this one at Cala Furnells. Majorca boasts excellent weather, gorgeous beaches and the finest Spanish cuisine. The islanders also know how to party – resorts like Magaluf are all about partying with friends, but you’ll find a more laid-back, Spanish vibe in Pollensa and Palma, which boast chic cocktail bars and seafront tapas places.
From Marbella’s chic marina and stylish beach clubs, to Nerja’s tiny, twisting streets, Malaga has something for everybody. Head to Torremolinos or Benalmadena with the little ones and you’ll find great resorts catering to family fun – from theme parks to a sea life centre and plenty of beachside activities. Malaga’s historic quarter is well worth a visit – you’ll be surprised to find an excellent Picasso Museum and the breathtaking Gibralfaro Castle.
